CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

posted Sep 8, 2018, 4:27 AM by Firwood Office   [ updated Apr 13, 2019, 1:10 PM ]

3/9/19 - 4/30/19
Campaign Goal $55,700.00

Firwood United Methodist Church is a significant presence in this community with its facilities being a haven for learning, love, and mission to over seven outside groups.

History:  The exterior wall on the Dagobert Street side of the church has suffered water damage causing erosion to the brick mortar and parapet.  This has caused the bricks to push out making the wall unstable,  The church chimney also has water damage to the capstone and the mortar has eroded.

The visible sign of erosion was noticed in the summer of 2018.  The Trustees submitted a claim with the insurance company that was denied; the trustees appealed the decision.  As part of the appeal process, a structural engineer was engaged by the Insurance Company who did a thorough inspection of the wall, roof and chimney.  It was determined the damage was due to years of rain and cold winters,  The engineer did confirm our concerns that repairs needed to be made soon to stabilize the wall and chimney noting risk of further damage with the upcoming winter.

In October 2018, we received a bid from Young's Masonry and Restoration LLC to make the repairs.  This is the same contractor who did the work on the bell tower in 2010.  We were not able to secure a bid from another contractor,  In November 2018, Young's Masonry did preliminary work to the roof and gable to prevent further water damage in the winter months,

Proposal:  In April, 2019, Young's Masonry will begin the permanent repairs which include: mechanically remove defective mortar joints and repoint them from the cap stones to four feet below; replace damaged cap stones with new limestone and apply masonry coating, and remove and relay any shifted brick;  Gable end left side repoint all areas that are defective; on parking lot side of chimney mechanically remove defective mortar joints from chimney down three feet; remainder of chimney repoint all areas defective.

The estimated total cost in $55.700.00.

Payment structure is: @20,000.00 at start of work, $20,000.00 at mid point, balance due upon completion,

Goal:  Raise $40,000.00 through a Capital Campaign to fund 90% of the project.  In addition, we are researching grant opportunities and a conference loan fund that might be available to us.

Please be in prayer for the leadership team as they act as stewards of all that is entrusted to them.

The Bell Choir is always in search of "ringers" and you do not need to have musical experience to join.  If you know your colors and can count to four, you can join the Bell Choir.  We practice Thursday evenings at 6:45 PM in the Bell Room in the basement of the church.  Join us!  We are a very nice group of "Ding Dongs".

If you are interested, please contact any member of the Bell Choir or leave a message at the church office.  (570-823-7721)

UNITED METHODISTS BELIEVE

WE BELIEVE IN THE TRIUNE GOD; THE TRINITY---FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT

*  God, the Father/Creator, who brings creation into existence, upholds and reveals the ways of life that make for peace and wholeness, and ever works to head and transform life through the power of love.
*  God the Son, Jesus Christ, the first born of a new creation who through his life, death and Resurrection saves us and all creation from the power of sin and death.
*  God the Holy Spirit, who comforts, sustains, guides and empowers us to participate in God's life and mission in the world.

WE BELIEVE EVERY PERSON IS A BELOVED CHILD OF GOD
*  Whom God created in God's divine image with inherent worth and dignity;
*  Who confronts and suffers the distorting and destructive effects of sin in this life;
*  Whom God has reconciled in the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, defeating the powers of sin and death;
*  Whom God seeks to make holy and whole, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, transforming us into Christlikeness.

WE BELIEVE IN THE CHURCH AS THE COMMUNITY CALLED TO BE INSTRUMENTS OF GOD'S PRESENCE AND COMING REIGN IN JESUS CHRIST
*  Where people worship God joyfully, proclaim God's Word faithfully and share the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion;
*  Where all people are welcomed and nurtured as God's sons and daughters;
*  Where people are initiated into Christ's body and nurtured toward Christian maturity through worship, prayer, study, fellowship and service;
*  Where the light of God's love, justice and peace exposes and overrules evil, injustice and sin;
*  Where we participate in God's mission of inviting. preparing and enlisting disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world and to follow the risen Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, into the hurting places of the world and among the outcasts and the forgotten.

WE BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE AS GOD'S REVEALED WORD
*  Authoritative in matters of faith and practice;
*  Containing the story of God's mighty acts of salvation in creation, in faithful engagement with people through the ages and supremely in Jesus Christ;
*  The primary source for understanding the nature and purposes of God;
*  Interpreted in the power of the Holy Spirit present in the community of faith.

WE BELIEVE IN THE FINAL TRIUMPH OF GOD'S REIGN OF COMPASSION. JUSTICE, GENEROSITY AND PEACE
*  Anticipating the firstfruits made possible today through the power of the Spirit and the reign of Christ;
*  Discovering a renewed creation where sin, suffering and death are overcome and God's victory is complete;
*  Celebrating with all the faithful who are raised to live eternally in God's loving presence;
*  Extending God's love to the whole creation, with God's mercy redeeming all of God's works, all that God loves.
